Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a critically important cardiovascular imaging modality. It provides additional and more accurate information than transthoracic echocardiography for specific diagnoses in some patients and for surgical and catheter-based cardiac intervention. This comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview on 2D/3D TEE is a compilation of lectures given by recognized experts in the field of echocardiography, providing cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and interventional cardiologists a practical guide to basic 2D/3D imaging acquisition, analysis, and current clinical application of this technology.
The evidence and case-based lectures give viewers an appreciation of new or established use of 2D/3D TEE in diagnosis and guiding management in patients with a broad array of cardiovascular conditions. The topics include 1) normal TEE examination, 2) basic and advanced echo technique for quantitative assessment for left ventricular volume and function, 3) use of 2D/3D TEE for decision making and guidance for the surgical and catheter-based intervention in patients with valvular diseases, 4) role of TEE in identifying the cardiac masses, vegetation, and thrombus, 5) application of TEE for non-cardiac surgery and hemodynamic monitoring for the critically ill patients, and 6) use of TEE guiding surgical repair for patients with congenital heart diseases including Ebstein's anomaly and ventricular septum defect.
This lecture series particularly highlights the use of 3D TEE to analyze the mechanism of mitral regurgitation, to provide surgeons "what they need to know," and to guide the optimal surgical and percutaneous mitral valve repair.
